‘Richard, how can we solve the problems of vandalism in our cities?’


‘I always used to explain to the parents at my school that we rarely get the children we want. Instead, we usually get the children we are. How we are with our children, how they see us with each other and the world around us, determines the sort of people our children become. For example, it is useless telling our children not to lie if they see that we ourselves are liars.
‘It is the same with societies. There is no way that we can regulate or legislate our way through this problem of vandalism. Our only true hope is to be found in how we are with each other, in how we organize our lives and lead our lives.
‘So do not ask: “what sort of vandals does our nation or neighbourhood have?” Ask instead: “what sort of nation or neighbourhood are we to have such vandals?”’
